The two dominant kingdoms of Sagus are the Kaimana Republic to the east and the Kingdom of Cyrille in the center. While the two nations are not currently at war, they do have a history of it. As of now, peace holds between the two nations and trade flows between them.
Kingdom of CyrilleEdit
The kingdom is Cyrille is a partial monarchy. A King or a Queen holds Divine Rule over the people. However, which Deity or even Pantheon this monarch draws the Divine Right to Rule from depends on the people. A small council, made up of representatives of every noble family, is assembled every twenty years to elect a new Deity or Pantheon of Gods to worship. Which one they choose is dependent on what this council feels the Kingdom needs most. Do they need the savage blessing of the God of War to stamp out their enemies? Do they need the gentle touch of the Goddess of Fertility to bless their harvests and women? Or is an entire Pantheon of Gods chosen, giving lesser blessings but from a larger variety? Or is the current Deity fulfilling the kingdoms needs and no switch is desired? Whenever this council convenes and chooses a new Deity, the current monarch must switch worship from the old God to the new one.
However, this doesn't always go as planned. Sometimes the monarch is unable to switch for any number of reasons. When this happens, a Champion of the new Deity is chosen and the monarch and the Champion must duel. That duel does not have to be martial combat. The current ruling monarch chooses the duel him or herself. The winner then becomes the ruling Monarch for the next twenty years. Currently the kingdom has the God of Seas as its chosen Deity, but the the council is soon to convene and elect a new Deity.
Cyrille's primary export was crops, wine, lumber and the services of mercenaries groups.
Kaimana Republic Edit
The first true Republic in all of Sagus history, the people of Kaimana led a surprisingly bloodless revolt for better representation of the people two hundred years ago. Historically, Kaimana was a Matriarchal Monarchy until the revolution. Females held the vast majority of power in both the household and government with the notable exception of the standing army, village militia's and manual laborers. These were run and staffed primarily by males. Males were seen more as specialists of the physical variety. Extremely capable in any manual labor or martial profession but not adept at more delicate professions.
Typically, the first born son of the Queen takes over Generalship of the nations army and militia's while the first born daughter will become Queen. However, two hundred years ago, the queen birthed seven children, all male. After the seventh, she became infertile due to trauma from birth. Without a daughter to take over, the Queen nominated one of her nieces as the heir to the throne. However, the law meant that that nieces brothers had the right to the Generalship of the Nations military. The eldest son of the Queen, Taldwyn, sixteen at the time, had already been training under the old General to take over, and in fact was much loved by the military as a whole as well as the vast majority of the male population. At eighteen, he would have officially taken over, the old General stepping down into an advisory position. But Taldwyns cousin ruined that. He immediately stepped in and took the Generalship, as he was twenty years old. But he had no military training at all and the people hated him.
Cyrille saw this weakness, and with the recent collapse of the Collective Colleges of Grothiel freeing up much of its military assets, began massing its armies on the border of Kaimana. This did not go unnoticed. The people of Kaimana fell into chaos. A vote of No Confidence was passed through the nobility of Kaimana and called for Taldwyn to return and take up the Generalship. Taldwyn agreed, and was placed again as the General of Kaimana. Over two years, Taldwyn skillfully fought off any incursion of the Cyrille military, suffering little losses and demoralizing the Cyrillian army. Cyrille eventually gave up, spreading its army back out to the villages as town guards and releasing the militia's from service. With victory in hand Taldwyn returned to the capital of Kaimana and confronted the Queen, demanding an immediate dismantling of the Matriarchy that has ruled for countless years. At first, she resisted, and Taldwyn called all the males to drop their tools and stop working. Because much of the male population had been drafted into the Border War, many of them listened. Taldwyn was a hero to them, and few would go against his orders.
For a year, all production in the country stopped. No smiths worked, no farms were tilled, no live stock was looked after. The economy fell, and the females attempted to take up all the jobs that the men had performed. They succeeded to an extent, preventing the complete collapse of everything, but the Queen knew it would be a death sentence to allow this to go on. Cyrille was undoubtedly watching, waiting for Kaimana to fall to its knees, easy pickings. The Queen summoned Taldwyn and agreed to his demands. Taldwyn ordered the return of the men and Kaimana quickly returned to its previous strength. That year of no work was named the Year of the Protest, is equally celebrated and hated by the people.
Over the course of three years, the Queen and Taldwyn worked with all of the nobility and dozens of representatives from all of the trade guilds, worker unions and groups that had formed during the Year of the Protest. Finally, at the end, a Republic stood. The new system called for two representatives, one male and one female, of each village over one hundred people in population to be elected every ten years and sent to the capital to elect one of them to the position of Princeps Senatus, with the opposite gender from the same village to act as Vice Princeps. The rest of the representatives formed a Senate and as a group they collectively ruled the country until the next election came around.
Kaimana's primary export is fish, ships and the services of its various Guilds and Unions.
Collective Colleges of Grotheil Edit
The Collective Colleges of Grotheil was a government formed from the Four Colleges of Magic. Each Prime from the Colleges along with delegates from the surrounding villages and the capital itself formed the ruling body of the nation. They would collectively vote on issues.
The primary export was magic artifacts and the services of magic users before the Colleges ended up destroying themselves.
